Tzvetan Todorov was a Bulgarian-French historian, philosopher, structuralist literary critic, sociologist and essayist. He was the author of many books and essays, which have had a significant influence in anthropology, sociology, semiotics, literary theory, intellectual history and culture theory.
We have also learn about Todorov's theory on narrative.He also states that there were 5 stages to a narrative structure,which are:
The Narrative Structure:
-1.Beginning / 1st Act -Character / setting introduction
-2. Middle / 2nd Act -A problem happens in the middle
-3. Ending / 3rd Act -Everything is resolved in the end.
5 stages of Narrative:
State of equilibrium - when opposites forces are balance and everything is normal and calm.For example in 'Cast Away' film; Chuck works for FedEx and he deliveries packages and travels the world.Chuck is also in a long term relationship with Kelly Frears,his girlfriend and they got engaged on the night of christmas.
2. Disruption of equilibrium - is when a problem arises by an event.For example in 'Cast Away' film ; His FedEx cargo plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean because of an explosion and cause fire on the plane
3. Recognition of disruption - is when the characters realizes the problems that need to be fixed. For example in 'Cast Away' film; Chuck got washed up on an uninhabitated island on his inflatable life raft that he got escapes with. He wakes up to this unknown place with nobody in the island.
4. Repair - is when the characters set on a mission to resove the situation. For example in 'Cast Away' film; Chuck builds a raft made up of woods and stick from the trees in the island with broken pieces of a public toilet that was also washed up on the island,and so he went on to sail out on his second try.Soon a passing cargo ship saves chuck
5. New Equilibrium - a restoration of the equilibrium or the new norm. For example in 'Cast Away' film; Chuck is back to his normal life after about over four years in the island alone and Chuck went to reunite with his fiance Kelly, but she told him that she taught he was already dead and that she is already married with someone else and had her own family,that mad Chuck sad.Chuck is living in his normal life alone.
