-It is not reality itself

Hall's Representation theory

Uses of stereotypes

-Media texts often uses stereotypes.

-For example stereotypes about men and women reinforce the idea that they are different;men are big,strong or brave and women are sensitive,more inferior or emotional.

Stereotypes

-Stereotypes are often times negative.

-Stereotypes are created by the media.

For example;

-Women is always associated with cleaning products in advertisements or always be in the kitchen.

-White people are always associated with wealth,rich and powerful,while black people are always associated with violence.

-Stereotypes tend to come about when there are people in power who are from the dominant hegemonic groups within a society.

-Hegemony: Leadership or dominance, especially by one country or social group over others.

-Many media companies are owned by these groups of people.
